Assessing and Tutoring with Sarah

Reading is excellent for our mental health

On a Sunday morning, there is nothing more wonderful than cosying up on the sofa, with a fluffy (or weighted) blanket, and a hot coffee.

This simple ritual tells my mind and body that it is resting. Rest is a right, not a reward! Our brains and bodies need time to recharge – it’s essential for physical and mental health. My way to recharge is to read for pleasure.

Reading is not just an enjoyable pastime; it can also have therapeutic benefits for our mental health. Countless studies have shown that reading can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression by providing an escape from the daily grind and allowing us to take a mental break.

In fact, reading has been shown to be as effective as some forms of therapy in reducing symptoms of depression. This is because reading allows us to immerse ourselves in a different world, which can help distract us from our problems and provide a sense of comfort and relaxation.

Furthermore, reading can also help improve cognitive function, memory, and concentration. It can challenge our minds and provide a sense of accomplishment as we learn new things and gain new perspectives.

Overall, incorporating reading into our daily routine can have numerous benefits for our mental health. Whether it’s a classic novel, a self-help book, or a magazine article, taking the time to read can provide a much-needed break from the stresses of life and improve our overall well-being.

Currently, I’m enjoying ‘The Sandman’ by Neil Gaiman. A series of beautifully illustrated graphic novels. What’s your current, or favourite read?

Sarah Wicks GMBPsS AMBDA APC PPM is a Specialist Teacher Assessor.

One of my greatest passions is reading, and I take great pleasure in helping others learn to read using science-based methods.

My goal is to inspire my students to embrace analytical challenges, offer unwavering support during their most challenging moments, and encourage them to step outside of their comfort zones and experience new things.

When I’m not in a classroom, I can usually be found curled up on a sofa reading a book or graphic novel, watching a Marvel movie, or playing RPGs!
